the rawkers ep…more than 10 years after the release of cassius first album, the duet comes out with a 6 tracks project that mustn’t have left a lot of people whove listened to it indifferent. well, if there are two people who appreciated the ep, it is jay-z & kanye west, aka the throne, who sampled the famous i <3 uso on their track why i love you, turning it into an absolute popular anthem. if the former album of the band was a tribute to adolescence, here it is more about the earliest days of ours, as the song les enfants (children) depicts it. to such an extent that the rawkers ep sounds like a gigantic playground, full of joy and happiness. were glad to repress this record and to give you an opportunity to escape through this enchanting opus, before cassius new album is released.

great debut release and new label from a rubadub shop regular featuring tracks from shop regulars. tip. this first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. there’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. the first track is by bleaker who put out a 12inch on unknown to the unknown last year, the second by miz aka big miz whos been putting out music on dixon avenue basement jams, the third by the burrell connection who has a release on west end communications and a track on a craig knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on big mizs boiler room set. these tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. bleaker, miz and the burrell connection have all been making waves in scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. and i dont think my track is too bad either.

on his first release for berceuse heroique, rotterdam’s finest dj overdose meets one of the strongest producers of detroit, mr. ob ignitt. overdose creates the best soundtrack for a “march of the robots” scene with dead city. the mighty bounce of early dr. dre productions meets some nasty electro carnage. on sorry to disappoint you can hear the classic west coast electro sound of some of his older releases mixed with some funky sci-fi synth lines. then, ob ignitt takes this monster of a tune and creates one of the gnarliest house tunes of this year with a proper g funk bassline that will properly test your sound system on a good night.

africa is not a country. we in the west often refer to african music but what is that exactly? it could be myriad, almost unimaginably different forms of music that bear little relation to each other, as after all africa is a vast continent that is larger than the united states, australia and the whole of europe combined. these four tracks showcase some of those different forms of music from across the continent. there is some cosmic synth drenched proto-house, an afro-beat call to arms, a hypnotic juju workout and a rough and ready, relentless lo fi west african banger. all proceeds will go to human rights justice group, nigeria.

last spotted together on the cut some three years ago with their eponymous debut lp, the crew like kaidi tatham, akwasi mensah, matt lord, and dego ‘ranks’ mcfarlane reunite for this fresh 2000black 12&#8243,,,,,. off the christmas card list is apparently a precursor to a second album from the quartet and it’s the last 12&#8243,,,,, in a fine year for 2000black that saw the killer dego lp as the centrepiece. the a-side is dedicated to the title cut, an endlessly slinky boogie number that really showcases the collective musicality of this crew, whilst the b-side is split between “hurry whilst they are away” and “fila high”. the former is bugged out beat down west london-style, and the latter a killer latin-flecked cut.

rnt co-head jkriv does it up royal here with a bit of old and a bit of new. on the a side the queen on her throne is one of j’s seminal reworks in all of its 8 min glory, and although names have been changed to protect the innocent, a bomb by any other name is still a bomb! on the flip, a lesser known west african 70’s jam is worked up into a raucous jazzy afro-house stomper in king mashie. plus there’s a the stripped down beats-n-synth-apella of queen’s beats, perfect for mixing with the og or played on its own!

it’s now pretty obvious that disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. it has also influenced musicians all around the world, and west-indies islands are no exception to the rule. indeed, at that time in the caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their us counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts, very few was known on these productions until recently. from an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, favorite recordings and waxist teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. with no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality caribbean disco/boogie tunes. favorite recordings & waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.

west side chicago hardware anthems. nick reads windbreaker project has been his refuge since the days of lazer crystal (thrill jockey). a chicago diy scene staple for over ten years, this is the first windbreaker full length. imagine kraftwerk being trapped in berghain and living off of floor scraps or christian hosoi pulling a christ air over the pyramids and you are somewhere close.

one of the defining releases on large music gets a special re-issue after a 16 year wait. considered by many to be one of the top 3 packages in the early large catalog, this ep set the trajectory for what would quickly become known as the west coast sound of american house. the main vocal on side a also became a venerable classic at the shelter in nyc and was played consistently by timmy regisford throughout his tenure there. the darker, more disco filtered tones on the flip side were also highly praised and played at the time by french djs such as daft punk, phil weeks, cassius and many others. rasoul is often overlooked as one of the chief architects of modern deep house, yet this release certainly secures his elite standing in the annals of house music history. essential!

parages 009 is ojpb (known as bowly) first ep on this label, a side project oriented house and disco. the a side starts with « pénétrante », a disco house track, with classic bassline and nice chords groove. on the second track, its simoncino’s remix. the italian with a strong taste for chicago house, signed on mathematics, lies and more… he turns the track into a wild west tune with deep sounds and melodic lines keeping the groove.b side starts with a deep percussive house track, super melodic and really catchy with a detroit influence…..you got to pay your dues man. last one is a super catchy disco edit that will stay in your head and bring some dance moves that you didnt know of.
